Jet Import
Jet Import is expanding with a multifunctional building, The Barn, and a new dock station, located on the existing site overlooking the Leie Valley. Rather than relocating to an industrial park, the choice was made to develop on-site, ensuring a harmonious balance between functionality and the surrounding landscape.
The Barn is inspired by the typology of an open barn, combining industrial and artisanal materials. The structure is built on a concrete base, while wooden walls and ceilings provide warmth and acoustic comfort. This blend of hard and soft materials creates a smooth transition between the industrial buildings and the natural landscape. The exposed structure also serves as the final finish, minimizing excess material use and reducing the ecological footprint.
The building is designed for flexibility, with modular construction elements allowing for future adaptation. Inside, spaces support a variety of work styles, from formal to informal, with natural light and sightlines enhancing the connection to the outdoor environment.
The Barn is linked to the dock station by a covered gallery, creating a sheltered outdoor space for staff and visitors. This area is landscaped with native wood, greenery, and gravel paths, forming a pleasant, green buffer between the two buildings.
Sustainability is central to the design: concrete core activation ensures energy-efficient heating and cooling, while solar panels and a heat pump system help minimize energy needs. The use of local materials, such as thermally treated wood and flax fiber insulation, further reinforces the project's sustainable ambitions.
The Barn is more than just a workplace; it is a space where work and life blend together, with a strong focus on sustainability and a harmonious interplay between architecture and nature.
