Villa Britannique

Gent, Belgium
2014-2016

This Art Deco villa, originally designed by the renowned architect Geo Hendrick, has been successfully transformed into a multi-family residence with a commercial space on the ground floor and a small studio in the rear extension. The project was carried out with a strong focus on preserving the original architectural qualities of the building.

The iconic Art Deco facade articulation of the villa, which had been altered by additions made in the 1980s, was fully restored. These non-original extensions were removed, the brickwork was carefully cleaned, and the concrete elements were treated to bring back the building’s original aesthetic.

The interior was reconfigured with minimal structural interventions, retaining the historic central staircase. Both in the common areas and the private residences, materials and tiles were selected to highlight the Art Deco spirit of the building. This approach ensured that the rich history of the villa remains evident, while adapting it to its new function as a multi-family residence. The DNA of the building continues to thrive within each new apartment.

At the rear of the property, a small urban courtyard was created where residents can store their bicycles, enhancing both the functionality and livability of the building.

During the conversion, special attention was given to acoustic performance and energy efficiency, ensuring that the building meets modern standards for comfort and sustainability.
